  • Capa

Building at Santa Apolónia, Lisbon

The goal of this work was to assess the conservation state and the structural safety of the APPI buildings in Lisbon (Santa Apolónia)

NCREP carried out a conservation state and the structural safety assessment of the Headquarters and Library buildings of the APPI, located at Santa Apolónia, Lisbon. This work intends to provide support to the rehabilitation design project of the two buildings.

The evaluation has shown the good state of conservation and the safety of the structures, concluding that they can be maintained, just by resorting to the replacement of some structural elements and to the adoption of specific strengthening measures that will improve their structural performance.

Rua das Flores, Porto

The aim of the project was to rehabilitate the building, preserving and enhancing its original architectural features.

According to the information gathered the building, built between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century, has served various purposes, from housing to commerce, functioning also as a hotel and an educational building at some point. These different types of occupation are reflected in its current internal organization. The building, with an area of approximately 1200m2, presents a traditional eighteenth century Oporto building typology: stone masonry exterior walls, timber floors and some interior timber walls. The building has an.

NCREP developed this project in two phases: the 1st phase involved the structural inspection and diagnosis of the building; the 2nd phase, which was conducted in accordance with the results obtained in the 1st phase, consisted in the structural rehabilitation/retrofitting project.

The structural inspection and diagnosis carried out allowed to assess existing damage and its causes, through which was concluded that the building presents a reasonable state of conservation, and that it is possible to maintain a considerable part of its structural elements, through localized rehabilitation and (or) structural reinforcement. Furthermore, in order to monitor some damage detected and their evolution over time, a static monitoring system, consisting in crack meters, was installed.

Following the 1st phase, the structural project was carried out, seeking a solution witch complies with technical, economic and architectural requirements, taking into account the existing structural materials and systems. The structural project gave particular focus to the need to improve the connection between vertical elements (bearing walls) and between them and the horizontal ones (floors and roofs). This was made in order to promote the behavior of the building as a “closed box”, and thus allowing a good distribution of horizontal loads throughout the structural elements and increase its capacity resistant to such loads.

Rua dos Douradores, Lisbon

The building is located in downtown Lisbon, also known as “Pombalina” downlown, priority reconstruction zone after the 1755 earthquake.

NCREP, at request of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Lisboa (SCML), did a technical report to aid in the decision making process regarding the future occupational program of a building located in downtown Lisbon. This work involved the assessment of the conservation status and structural safety of the building through structural inspection and diagnosis actions. Additionally, some intervention solutions appropriate to resolve the encountered structural problems were defined and based on them a cost estimation of the future structural intervention was done.

In this context, in order to better understand the structural behavior of the building and to more accurately characterize the composing materials, thus validating the obtained information, it was conducted an in-situ experimental campaign on the horizontal and vertical structural elements (Resistograph, seismographs, thermograph, pacometer and hygrometer).

The Inspection, Diagnosis and Structural Assessment, fundamental preparatory actions in any structural rehabilitation process, allowed estimating a severe degradation in approximately 30% of the horizontal (floors and roofs) and vertical (“frontal” and “tabique” walls) structural elements, which have to be replaced entirely. The remaining elements required different levels of intervention depending on their conservation state, what may be resolved through localized interventions and element substitution. Regarding the seismic performance of the building, a simplified analysis allowed us to estimate effective measures to implement on the structural elements and connection between them.

Based on the type and level of intervention that is considered important to perform, taking into account only the effect of vertical load, it was estimated a global cost for the suggested structural interventions, namely rehabilitation, strengthening and replacement of the horizontal and vertical structural elements.
